Ghost Rider: Travelling on the Healing Road by Neil PeartGhost Rider:
Travelling on the Healing Road

All right, so it's not about a Real Classic type motorcycle, and it's more about riding for therapeutic purposes, not racing or model evaluation, but I still most strongly recommend that you read "Ghost Rider" by Niel Peart.

Peart was percussion and lyricist for the Canadian rock group Rush. After the tragic death of his daughter and wife, he hit the road on his BMW 1100GS (THAT much I can identify with!) to try to get some of the numbness out of his soul.

He writes well of his travels and experiences. Americans and Canadians will be familiar with some of the places he went, but not all of them. You certainly can't help but empathize with his personal torment and recovery.

One light note I'll mention. Keeping the BMW in repair, staying in motel rooms, eating food, and covering all the things that happen when you're on the road for months on end was depleting his bank balance. The Rush business manager told him he was running through money much faster than CD royalties were bringing it in. Peart thought about it a while, and decided he did NOT want to sit in one place and mope. So he announced "I'll keep riding, and when the money's gone, I'll kill myself." There have been times I wish I had the guts to adopt that policy for myself.
