NAIL SALE: Loathe though I am to part with
the old thing, The Old Nail © is on the block. This is a 1969 or so vintage
Moto Guzzi New Falcon. Readers of the world's previously finest used bike guide
monthly may remember a series of articles called The Nail Files. They were
about this bike. There is also a series of articles on this very web site
called Tuning for Need. They too are about this bike. What you have here is
your basic and well-used New Falcon with some improvements.
The major one is the cylinder head. This
has been welded-up and machined to a bathtub shape with a squish band, based on
the design used in a classic Triumph endurance racer (Dave Degens?). The head
has also been twin-plugged. It has new and much lighter valves with springs of
a matching rating. All courtesy of The Cylinder Head Shop.The engine runs, but
needs adjustment. What it needs is someone with a lathe or a Humbermate to skim
the head or barrel down to the proper squish clearance. Once this is set, there
may be a need to adjust the lash caps on the valve stems to bring the adjusters
into the right range. It also needs the drain plug on the right fork leg to be
fitted with a new seal (I have spare ones of those too).
The engine has a new piston, rings and
liner. The bike comes with a load of spares. These include a larger piston,
spare liner, higher-capacity oil pump, head bearings, various gaskets and so
on. It also comes with some of the special tools, which include the flywheel
puller, fork-leg spanner and ignition-timing quadrant. I also have a complete
electronic ignition set for it, plus a new twin-outlet coil. And some new
transfers. Plus a home-made pillion seat. And the manual and parts list. And
you can also have the SU carb that I was planning to fit next. The bike is
fitted with a Carabinieri handlebar fairing and leg shields plus indicators.
The tyres are good and it has a chain oiler. Oh, and a grease nipple for the
swinging-arm pivots. It's currently fitted with a Harley silencer, but comes
with a spare Norton (perhaps) one and the
original but rusty Moto Guzzi affair.
This bike is one of the more developed
road-going New Falcons. The Km speedo has gone round the clock, meaning that
it's done about 60,000 miles. It's done the National Rally for a Gold. I passed
my Advanced Motorcycling test on it. It's boring on motorways but a total hoot
on the Yorkshire Dales roads near me.
