The HERITAGE MOTOR CENTRE at Gaydon has the world's largest collection of classic British cars, and a much smaller selection of old bikes too. Then there's the quad bikes and off-road Land Rover adventure course (which have nothing whatsoever to do with biking, but we love 'em). Open 10am to 5pm. The LLANGOLLEN MOTOR MUSEUM combines classic bikes, cars and memorabilia with an excellent sense of humour and that family-run feel. They also have space for club rallies in their grounds. Closed November to Feb. The LONDON MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM opens 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, admission £3, at Greenford near the A40. WHITEWEBBS MUSEUM houses an excellent collection of historic vehicles (including a floor of two wheelers) in a fabulous renovated pumping house at Enfield, near J25 off M25. The museum is only open on Tuesday afternoons and the last Sunday of the month. The BLACK COUNTRY LIVING MUSEUM features bikes and cars built in Wolverhampton (they're also on a mural at Wolverhampton Station, which is a better place to change trains than New Street, believe me. TP). Open 10am to 5pm, admission £8.25. The HAYNES MOTOR MUSEUM welcomes you to view the 50-or-so bikes which nestle within the huge Haynes collection. Closed only for Christmas, otherwise open 10am until 4pm at Sparkford, near Yeovil. Visit the ACE CAFÉ for tea and chips, open all week on the North Circular Road, London NW4. The MUSEUM OF BRITISH ROAD TRANSPORT includes plenty of Black Country stalwarts within Coventry's transport history. Speed freaks will love seeing Thrust SSC and Thrust2, too. Open 10am to 4.30pm. The NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM at Beaulieu offers masses more than just motorbikes with vintage and classic vehicles from all around the world. Open all year but not Christmas Day from 10am to 5pm. The LAKELAND MOTOR MUSEUM at Cumbria's premier stately home, Holker Hall, has over 10,000 exhibits on display. Open April to October, six days each week (closed Saturday). Admission £6.50 for adults. The SAMMY MILLER MUSEUM now has two new galleries of Norton and competition machines, plus tea-rooms and craft shop. Open 10am to 4.30pm, admission £3.50, Bashley Manor, New Milton, Hants. It will take you a whole day to wander around the NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM next to the NEC in Brum. Closed just on Christmas Day, opens 10am to 6pm and has a great bookshop too. The motorcycle museum at STANFORD HALL is a living display with frequent changes of exhibits of racing and vintage bikes. Plenty else to see there, too, and a nice tea room. Near J19/20 off M1 by Lutterworth. Normally opens April to October. The BROOKLANDS MUSEUM TRUST at Weybridge reveals all about the birthplace of British motorsport, on two wheels and four. Open Tuesday to Sunday, admission £7. The Miner's Arms, Greenhow: This bike-friendly pub is at the centre of what used to be a huge mining village. They attract all sorts of customers, including new and old motorbikes, classic cars, and rallies. Excellent riding country! |
