Ducati 250 Single Classic Racer

Five years ago racer Jerry Fiford bought a bevel-drive 250 Ducati and set about converting it to the perfect classic racer. Here's his story in pictures...

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe Honda forks and twin disc front end were stripped, cleaned and sold on to help fund the project.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe rear shocks were also dumped.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerA set of Ducati front forks and a front hub were found. The stanchions were re-chromed and then the forks were rebuilt with new springs.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerEventually a Ducati top yoke and a pair of difficult to find 31.5mm were located and the front end began to take shape.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe wheels were rebuilt with new rims and stainless steel spokes, and racing tyres were fitted.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe swinging arm was modified by replacing the bushes with roller bearings, then it was fitted to the repainted frame using Hagon shocks.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe engine was rebuilt with all new bearings, a new con-rod and race piston.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe cylinder head was modified to use twin plugs and the valve springs converted from hairspring to coil spring operation.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerRace levers and a quick action throttle were fitted to the clip-ons.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerDucati 250 Single Classic RacerWith the engine in the frame and the wheels fitted it started to feel like the end was in sight.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerThe bike was sent away to have high level Gibson exhaust and race silencer - complying with the 105dB limit - fitted.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerA new 32mm monobloc carb was fitted.

Ducati 250 Single Classic RacerAnd an alloy tank was bought to replace the fibreglass one that was being eaten by the ethanol in modern petrol.
