Crook Inn Rally 2012
Home -> Features -> News ->

RealClassic readers are invited not to attend this rally, which isn't happening in aid of an historic Scottish coaching inn...

There are plenty of riding and ride-in events for classic motorcycle enthusiasts to enjoy each season. However this particular rally requires absolutely no going hither or yon should you choose to get involved. It is a virtual rally for virtual riders, who'd rather stay at home than risk another drenching this summer. It's also the ideal rally for international RC readers. At last! Here's something you can participate in as fully as if you lived here in Blighty…

Non-attenders on horses and carriages are welcome...

It's all in aid of the unique and welcoming Crook Inn which has been a popular and attractive destination for over 400 years. Historically important as one of the first licensed coaching inns in Scotland, the Crook Inn attracted a huge number of motorcyclists and other interesting groups, clubs and individuals from around the world. Rallies and runs were staged at the Crook Inn over the years leaving locals and visitors with many fond memories of a unique venue with a very warm welcome.

Now the local community is trying to raise the funds to buy the Crook Inn, and as part of their fundraising activities they've invited everyone to participate in a virtual Crook Inn rally. This is not an actual rally so you are totally free to celebrate it in your own unique manner.

Inevitably, anyone recognise the two cars?...

This offers you the option to enjoy the rally whenever you like, at a location of your choice - food, drink, music, entertainment, silly games, companions, socialising, accommodation, hangovers and travel are entirely optional! If you're lucky you can even celebrate it without rain, wellies or midgies!

Of course, you can enjoy all the traditional pre-rally motorcyclists' preparations. Plan the route which you won't be taking, decide which vital items you'll do without for a weekend because you're bound to have forgotten them, give your classic bike an entirely unnecessary service, select which spanners you won't need and get ready to… not ride.

Entrants are encouraged to send a photo proving non-attendance at this non-event. Photos may be posted on the Crook Inn website with categories for the furthest distance not travelled; best club non-attendance; best alternative rally photo; best reason given for non-attendance. We think we could be in with a chance for the club award - so remember if you enter the non-rally, then tell them you're a member of the RealClassic Club…

Applications to not attend should be made via savethecrook.org.uk where secure payments can be made. Alternately please send your name and address (and mention) with a cheque for £10 made payable to Save the Crook, c/o The Treasurer, Tweedsmuir Community Company, Polmood Lodge, Tweedsmuir, Scotland ML12 6QN.

A minimum donation of £10 is required for each individual entry. Entrants can celebrate the rally as they chose but please remember:

Non-attendance is absolutely compulsory

Inevitably, anyone recognise the tractor?...

Entrance fees will enable a donation to the Save the Crook Inn fund, cover postage for a limited edition cast metal and enamel rally badge and a certificate of non-attendance. If the organisers are successful in saving the Crook Inn and subsequently re-opening it, this certificate will entitle you to a pint or soft drink in the future.

Please email non-attendance photos and excuses to Rally@savethecrook.org.uk with rally photos in the subject line and non-attendee name and address.

All applications must be in before Halloween - judging will take place in November. Badges and certificates will be sent out after this point.

Anyone recognise the bloke who's just walked out of shot?...

It is hoped that the organisers will be able once again to run proper rallies at the Crook Inn in future years and look forward to seeing you there and sharing a pint and rally memories. All monies raised will go towards securing the purchase, refurbishment and re-opening of the Crook Inn for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

The organisers' aim is to raise £160,000, and they've already got over £50k in the kitty. But time is pressing - so if you're not going to attend, then don't attend as quickly as possible!
