Leighton Hall Motorcycle Hill Climb
Entries have opened for the Leighton Hall Motorcycle Hill Climb, the perfect opportunity to try your hand – and your classic bike – at a short circuit sprint...
If you’ve been reading the magazine recently then you’ll have seen RealClass regular Darren Carter demonstrating how much fun it is to sprint an old bike in hill climb competitions. His BSA Thunderbolt featured in RC145/May16, and Darren explains just how easy it is to prepare yourself and your classic for friendly competition. Part of the trick is finding a suitable event – and here’s one now…
The Leighton Hall Hill Climb takes place on Sunday 25th September 2016 at the historic house in Carnforth, Lancashire. The track has a thrilling 50/60-degree bend some 50 metres from the start-line which adds extra excitement – this isn’t just a straight-line hill climb. Racing is open to all classes from vintage to modern machines and three-wheelers, with no capacity limit, so all enthusiasts can push their bikes to full throttle.
Organiser Ian Sherrard says ‘this is the second time we’ve taken our hill climb to Leighton and it’s popular with riders and spectators alike. The track through Leighton’s stunning parkland is 220 metres in length and there are no restrictions on speed, so it’s spectacular to watch and ride!’
On the day, riders are asked to arrive from 6am to have their equipment and machines inspected. They’ll then receive a rider’s briefing with some safety instructions, before each competitor gets the chance to do two practise runs from 9.30am. Lunch follows from 12pm to 1pm and then racing starts. The gates open to the public at 9am. Spectator admission is £8.50 for adults, and there’s free parking on site (but no camping at this event).
If you’re tempted to take to the track on your classic (or modern machine: takes all sorts) then email firstname.lastname@example.org for the race regs and entry form. The deadline for all entries is September 12th, and riders must be over 18 to take part. You need to belong to an ACU-registered club and can apply for a day licence when you submit the event entry form. And if you do take part, let us know how you get on!
