Preview: National Motorcycle Museum LIVE – 1/11/14

The Brit Bike Museum at Brum hosts a classic biking bonanza on Saturday, with race stars on stage, a chance to win a Vin, try a bike, meet the experts, a whole lot more and FREE admission, too...

The 30th anniversary celebrations at the National Motorcycle Museum culminate this coming weekend with a huge free Museum Live open day on Saturday 1st November 2014. The fun starts the night before, when the Museum hosts an evening Steve Parrish for an evening of outrageous tales as part of his 2014 tour. The events and activities then take place across the whole NMM complex on the Saturday – not just inside the many exhibition halls but in the adjoining conference centre as well.

For this one day only, admission to the Museum and all the activities will be entirely FREE of charge. Says Museum Director James Hewing: ‘We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the last three decades with an amazing free event for all the family to enjoy.’

If you can get to the NMM, which is next to the NEC just off the M42 near Birmingham, then here’s what’s in store:-

Free Museum Entry: Everyone is invited to visit the Museum collection which hosts over 1000 classic motorcycles: the largest collection of British bikes in the world. Free entry and free guided tours, and make sure you collect a timetable on the way in so you don’t miss anything later one.

Indoor Autojumble: A large indoor autojumble will be snuggled up in the Museum’s conference facilities, so you’ll be able to browse for spare parts and such without needing your wellies and umbrella.

Stars on Stage / Race Bikes Live: Steve Parrish will be your host to present four different Stars On Stage on the Saturday. These free 45 minute chat shows include star riders and the machines that made them famous: started and running so you can hear them rev. These talks will also feature the men behind the scenes of the old British industry, including original factory mechanics. The four features are:

  • The Norton Rotary Years with Brian Crighton, Trevor Nation and Ian Simpson
  • Slippery Sam with Mick Grant, Les Williams, John Woodward and Norman Hyde
  • Norton 750 Racers / the NVT Challenge with Phil Read, Mick Grant Norman White
  • TT machines with John McGuinness, John Cooper, Norton’s Stuart Garner and Ken Sprayson

    Museum Partners / Trade Displays: Throughout the day there will be special feature displays showcasing some of the specialist suppliers and craftsmen who keep the Museum’s machines in fine fettle, including the Museum’s own restoration team. These experts will be available to chat and answer questions. Look out for trade stands and displays from many well-known names in classic motorcycling.

    Try a Bike Training: Wheels Motorcycle Training will give visitors the chance to try a bike free of charge. Anyone over the age of 16 will have the opportunity to learn to ride in a controlled environment. It’s probably best to prebook your session on 0121 328 9906 or enq@2wheelstraining.com

    Photo Studio: Road-race enthusiasts have the opportunity to have their picture taken astride the iconic 1992 Senior TT-winning Rotary Norton. There will be a nominal cost of £2.50 for your A4 print that will be printed off to take away immediately.

    Celebrity Book Signings: Phil Read, Ken Sprayson, Norman Hyde and other motorcycling personalities will be available to sign copies of their books in the Museum shop during the day.

    Wheelie Machine: If you’ve never quite managed to master the art of one-wheel acrobatic antics, you can learn how to pull a wheelie in complete safety on the Extreme Wheelie Simulator (there is a charge for this)

    And when you need to take a break from all this activity, the Museum shop and restaurant will be open throughout the day serving breakfast, lunch and a range of hot meals and snacks. The lasagna is lovely.
