CBG Winter Classic Preview: 7/8 January 2017

Do you plan to spend the chilly winter season bringing an old bike back to life? The Winter Classic show at Newark is the perfect place to stock up on spares and spanners while you admire a cracking collection of classic bikes...

The Carole Nash CBG Winter Classic takes place on the first free weekend of the New Year, on 7th and 8th January 2017, and so it provides an ideal excuse to stir yourself from the sofa and blow away some cobwebs after all that festive excess. The show and jumble returns to its indoor digs at Newark County Showground, filling four halls with club and concours displays as well as an outdoor trade area for hardy souls seeking rare spares. Wrap up warm: it doesn’t always snow – but it’s pretty common at this event to have the frost nipping at your nose…

Private entries and bike displayed on club stands range from Andy Bolas’s Yamaha YSR50, possibly the smallest race rep event built, to Roger Moss’s really rather rapid 1934 Scott Flying Squirrel, and Bill Dawson’s 1950 Velocette Covel built by former race mechanic Hendley Cox. Club stands include the Velo owners and the VMCC, Greeves Riders, Lincs Triumph, National Sprint Association, Italian owners, Douglas, Honda CBX, AJS, Honda and Suzuki owners, VJMC, British Historic racers, the TR3OC and Sunbeam fellowship, Virago and Gold Star owners, trikes and straightliners, 2-strokes, Gold Stars, Velo owners, classic racing and more.

All together they represent almost every aspect of the classic motorcycling world: British, American, Japanese, Italian and German; solos and sidecars; used on the road and for racing. And someone has to choose the best of the bunch! Concours awards are presented for efforts in a wide range of classes, and the prize-giving ceremony is normally on the Sunday at 4pm.

No show is complete without its star guest, and the Winter Classic offers double the fun with sidecar duo Ben and Tom Birchall headlining the event. The pair will join regular compere Steve Plater on stage for interviews, to talk about their many accomplishments which include being world sidecar champions, four-time TT race winners and the current sidecar TT lap record holders. They will also be available for signing autographs and presenting awards. Listen out for announcements about Q&A sessions and other entertainment.

Ready to show, on ...

If you’re part-way through a project then you’ll find plenty of trade specialists to supply spares and equipment for your winter rebuild; stainless fittings, tools, welding equipment, batteries, chains, speedos, leathers, oils, earplugs, books, gloves, workwear, wax jackets, storage systems, cleaning kit, etc. There’s also an entire hall dedicated to Scooter World displays with challenges, rebuild competitions, a custom show, charity auction and start-up sessions (shouldn’t that be ‘ring-ding’ sessions?)

And if you’re very, very lucky, then it might even snow!
