Service Stars 5

Need good service from a classic motorcycle specialist? We've got another batch of real life recommendations for all sorts of old bike stuff, from wheel rims to seat covers, crash hats to switchgear...

Switched On

When the left hand switch cluster on my Commando split recently I rang TMS of Nottingham for a replacement.

'We don't have any,' Martin said, 'Andy's just had a load in, ring him.'

So I rang Andy at Tri-Cor had a nice chat about all things Bonneville and the switch cluster appeared next day. The new switchgear was easy to fit, and had all the right wires and stuff PLUS the headlamp flasher / horn button actually works for either function rather than just both.

For my money TMS and Rare Spares are both stars - I do love it when the phone's answered by someone who knows what I'm on about (insurance company please note). Perhaps the most pleasing part was that the two businesses conspired in my favour. Anyone would think they liked old Brit bikes.

Without A Hitch

I ordered a part for my Enfield from Hitchcocks on Tuesday afternoon and it was here -- in Brittany, France -- on Thursday morning. Not bad!

Dashing Dnepr

I posted off for a coil for my Dnepr to F2 Motorcycles on Friday. Had a telephone call from them Saturday to check a couple of things. Then on Monday morning the correct coil arrives. EXCELLENT SERVICE! I thought others might be interested as they also sell Ural, Enfield, and some other spares. Highly recommended.

Engineering Excellence

Spartan Engineering (the people who do the fabbo RE Bullet Trialer) made some bits for my Beeza. They were not the cheapest, however I could not have specced the end result any higher if I had tried. I took them a cardboard template, told them the material I wanted it made from and… Bob's your father's brother. Had a chat about bike in general, looked over an RE he was doing for a customer (fairly awesome to be honest), talked about what bits were good and the like. Dropped some more bits off for a bit of fabrication work, and will be going back as I need them.

Top Bananas and all that, so if you want a one-off made for your bike and live near North Devon, these chaps are the dog's whotists.

Hat Attack

Disaster struck on my way to the TT this year when (at 3am and in pouring rain) I managed to break one of the base plates on my Arai Quantum F resulting in the visor flapping in the breeze. SWMBO came to the rescue with my old Everoak and the TT trip was saved.

When I got back I contacted Phoenix distribution, the Arai importers who said 'no problem, take it to one of our dealers and they'll sort it out for you'. So I took it to Infinity Motorcycles in High Holborn who replaced the broken part, made sure that the other side was OK and reseated the visor to seal properly. All done with a smile and free of charge. Great service and guaranteed future custom from yours truly.

Seat Problem Solved

The seat cover on my Matchless was in bad condition, so I thought I'd have a go and re-cover it myself; after all it can't be that difficult to do, can it? I bought some pvc, not as thick as the original, and took my old seat cover off and stripped it for a pattern. After two days of breaking needles and stabbing myself on the sewing machine I gave up. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. That's what I get for being a cheapskate!

So I phoned RK Leighton between 3pm and 4pm yesterday, and he had one in stock. I explained I was a bit stuck without the seat and he said he would do his best to get it delivered.

At 7.30 am this morning it arrived. What a surprise! Couldn't have been much quicker if he only lived up the road, and it's excellent quality as well.

Wheely Quick

Central Wheel Components I sent off a pair of hubs last week to be built into a pair of Morad (Akront) valanced rims. I got a phone call on Thursday to say the hubs had arrived and to check the details I'd sent. I was told the wheels would take about a fortnight. Much to my surprise I got another call on Monday to tell me the wheels were ready and they duly arrived yesterday afternoon.

This was from Central Wheel Components and yes I did mention RealClassic, if only because I then got free return postage on a pair of wheels (they're also doing a pair of Avons for £100).

Top Tigers

I emailed Tri-Supply with a shopping list a yard long as there are a few things that need attending to on the Tiger while it is stripped down. I followed up my emails this morning with a phone call to Oliver Barnes to discuss one or two problems and ask a few questions about the relevant spares for the 5TA engine fitted in my Tiger 100 frame.

He couldn't have been more helpful and had virtually everything on the list that I required. He also told me the parts would probably arrive tomorrow. Top service.
