VMCC Classic Motorcycle Events in 2014
There's still more than a month of 2013 to run, but already the Vintage Motor Cycle Club have a packed schedule planned for 2014. Plenty of time to get your classic pride and joy prepared!...
RELAY RALLY: 4th May 2014
This is one of the most inclusive riding events we know, open to all VMCC members. You don't have to travel across half the country to get to the start or finish: just choose a route to suit yourself and visit various checkpoints along the way. There are normally 80 or more controls hosted by VMCC sections across the UK, and a full list is circulated prior to the event. You can ride any VMCC-eligible machine and collect stamps and stickers on your route card along the way. The theory behind the Relay Rally is that it encourages members to meet other classic enthusiasts outside of their usual chums, and brings plenty of old bikes out onto the road where the public will see them in use… hopefully inspiring other riders to give classic motorcycling a go. See our report on the 2012 event for more info.
TT RALLY: First week of June 2014
We have found conflicting dates for this so it's worth checking with the Isle of Man section to be sure before booking your ferry! There's normally a whole week of activities with a mixed schedule of rides, social gatherings and displays. See vmcciom.org
VINTAGE TRAINING DAY: 7th June 2014
Really old motorcycles can be a bit scary, right? Thumb throttles, girder forks, hand gear change, no clutches and rim brakes… all a bit intimidating if you've not tried it before. Which is why the VMCC set up the Training Day, when folks familiar with riding conventional (ie, more modern) motorcycles could have a bash at riding the really old kit in controlled circumstances, and with expert tuition from the machines' owners. If it follows the same pattern as the previous event, the Training Day will take place at the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon on the same weekend as the Banbury Run. You will need to book in advance as places are limited. Here's what to expect…
BANBURY RUN: 8th June 2014
One of the world's premier vintage events, this road run for 600 motorcycles attracted thousands of spectators and includes a huge autojumble with plenty to do and see all day. The run itself is open only to veteran and vintage machines manufactured before 31st December 1930, with discounted entry fees for really old bikes. If you'd like to take part then enter immediately: it's always full and entries close in Feb. Period clothing is definitely de rigeur! There's free parking for spectators, free entry to the Motor Heritage Centre which hosts the event at Gaydon, on-site camping, hotel accommodation arrangements, discounted spectator tickets if booked in advance from 01926 645029 (available Spring 2014). See www.banbury-run.co.uk
FESTIVAL OF 1000 BIKES: - CANCELLED
Following management changes at Mallory Park circuit, the Vintage Motor Cycle Club have decided not to run the Festival of 1000 Bikes this year. More information here...
FOUNDERS' DAY: 20th July 2014
This one of the biggest events in the old bike calendar now attracts around 4000 visitors to enjoy a traditional British summer Sunday in the grounds of Stanford Hall near Lutterworth in Leicestershire. Features a giant autojumble with many private sellers clearing out genuine old components, plus show-ring displays, club stands and private entries along a specific theme. A wonderful, old-fashioned day out with classic bikes at its core. See www.thetaverners.co.uk
WEST KENT RUN: 1st to 4th August 2014
Organised by the West Kent Section of the VMCC, this weekend normally take place at The Friars at Aylesford with activity from the Thursday through to the Monday. There are social runs on the Friday and Monday, with a 100-mile run on the Saturday and motorcycle show and jumble on the Sunday. The majority (around 85%) of participating motorcycles are British bikes and European machines but all pre-1980 classic motorcycles are invited to attend. The public are welcome on the Sunday when admission normally costs £5 and includes gymkhana, trade stands, competition bike display, etc. Entries for the whole event are available from January. See www.westkentrun.co.uk
MANX RALLY 21st to 28th August 2014
The VMCC Isle Of Man section host this seven-day festival which incorporates social rides, a regularity run, a closed-roads lap of the TT Course, concours events, gala dinner, prize presentations, the VMCC Festival of Jurby plus time to enjoy the GP racing and the classic TT and two trials. Rally entry is normally around £30 (with extra fees for some events). Discounted ferry and accommodation arrangements. All info at www.vmcciom.org
NORTHANTS SCATTER RALLY: 28th September 2014
This event is open to all riders on VMCC-eligible machines - if you're not already a member than you pay £3 on top of the £8 entry fee for day membership. It starts at 9am at Earls Barton and finishes at 3pm. Riders visit a number of unmanned sites in Northamptonshire to answer a simple question to prove that they have been there. They also have to visit up to three manned controls where they have to answer six road safety and motorcycle related questions. The distance you travel is related to the age of machine you ride, so veterans needs only stop at seven controls and travel 45 miles, while late classic and modern machines must visit 17 locations. The different classes are:
Riders receive the details of the locations about ten days before the event so they can plan their route - so obviously you must pre-book in plenty of time (there's no entries on the day). Entry forms are usually available in June from 01604 859215.
Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the events which the VMCC host around the country every weekend. See www.vmcc.net to check what's happening near you.
And if you'd like to invite the public along to your club event, please drop us a line (rchq at realclassic.net) with all the details and we'll pass the word…
