Classic Bike Collections - The Sammy Miller Museum

When we asked what else you'd like to see on RealClassic.co.uk, one of the top suggestions was a guide to motorcycles in museums. Here, then, is the first: Russ Gannicott's personal view of the Sammy Miller museum...

The Sammy Miller Museum is set in wonderful rural surroundings on the edge of the New Forest and houses what is probably the most significant collection of competition machines in the country. A recent extension to the building has created space for around seventy additional bikes and the two storey layout allows for the uncluttered display of three hundred or so, in total.

I spy with my little eye...

Sammy is a living legend in his own right, and through his successes in the property market has been able to collect together a unique assortment of machinery. The thing that makes it unique is Sammy himself. Having money would not be sufficient, you need to have the contacts.

This is where Sammy has the edge. His record as a trials rider is unequalled and he comes from a generation which produced most of the all time great road-racers, many of whom were his peers during his road-racing career and who now make up the most astonishing old boys' network. A quick look at the display cards on the exhibits reads like a who's who of motorcycling, from Duke to Ago, Hailwood to Minter, the list seems endless.

There'll be a Dustbin Fairing revival one day, you mark my words...

Whilst my own interests lay firmly among the incredible collection of racing machinery, there is more to the museum than competition bikes.

Almost all the bikes on display represent a significant moment in motorcycle design, from early flat tankers to a feet-forward project bike, not to mention the amazing collection of factory prototypes, they all seem to have earned their place in the display halls.

There is no room for mediocrity here, and no padding out of displays, everything feels special.

The standard of the exhibits is very high, as this is very much a 'living museum', with many of the bikes being restored on the premises and frequently fired up on event days.

Talking of events, these are always pretty special as Sammy will wheel out several bikes and visitors get the chance of hearing them run and see them ridden around the courtyard - sometimes at an astonishing pace by the 'old master' himself - great fun! It's not uncommon to turn up and find Sammy riding his Gilera 4 around the car park… probably just for the hell of it!

Gilera Four, ready to run.

For the first time visitor the museum is well laid out with a large car park and concrete hardstanding for bikes, a rural craft shop (for the less interested!) and a superb café/tea rooms, all set in a four sided farm style complex around a central courtyard. If it is going to be your first visit and you've got family with you then I'd suggest going anytime other than an event day. If you're going by bike, then a jumble or event day will be the best way to get the most out of your visit, but make sure it's on before you set out!

An Earles forked BSA, apparently. It's certainly very shiny.
