Classics on the Green at Lerryn, Cornwall
Rick Howell discovered a crowd of classic motorcycles at the new Cornwall base for Bournemouth Bantams...
Howard and Hilary Blakeborough who run Bournemouth Bantams relocated during the summer to the very lovely and off-the-beaten-track location of Lerryn in Cornwall. Apart from running the BB mail-order business which helps to keep entire flocks of Bantams on the road, they've also taken on the village stores and a couple of holiday lets.
Despite all the organisation required to get that lot sorted, they announced that they would also host an open day on their patch of creekside green at the end of September. So it only seemed fair to go along and show support whilst the late summer continued to stay dry and warm.
The event was initially aimed at the ubiquitous Bantam and inevitably ten or more two-stroke BSAs made the long trek west from as far up country as Poole, mixing with Howard’s collection plucky cluckers. On top of that little lot, a proper mix of other kinds of classic bikes pitched up from mid-morning.
At various stages during the day around 35 machines were lined up on the green whilst their owners enjoyed tea, coffee and (naturally) pasties, overlooking the tranquil scene of the tidal Lerryn river.
The visitors’ bikes ranged from a 1921 350 Wolf through a couple of WW2 veterans, to 1950s and ’60s go-to-work two-strokes, trials irons and café racers, plus a variety of later machines in the adjacent car park. There was something for everyone to enjoy in a very relaxed setting.
Howard promises to repeat the gathering next year, certainly next September, and potentially on other dates too. Tea and pasties are available from the shop most of the year round so this means there’s now another friendly venue to aim for on those far west country runs.
Just check the tide tables first!
