Lytham Classic Vehicle Show
This annual classic show often features an interesting array of old motorcycles. Henry Gregson reports (and won a prize, too!)...
The Lytham Classic Show is an annual event, held at Lytham Hall, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. The setting is the old home and estate of the Clifton family; a beautiful venue. Organised by Mark Woodward, the 2014 show in early August was the seventh to be held at Lytham Hall. It catered for a wide range of classic and vintage vehicles: one-make car clubs, classic car clubs, classic cars and custom cars as well as a decent selection of classic motorcycles. Although well supported by exhibitors, this year's show was spoiled somewhat by poor weather which kept audience attendance down.
That didn't stop the local branch of the VMCC, the Blackpool and District boys whose excellent display won the award for the Best Club Stand, beating a whole heap of large and prestigious car clubs in the process.
VMCC members also secured some other trophies: Graham Jackson's Levis took the Best Pre-1950 Bike prize, while my own BSA A65 Rocket won the Best 1960s Bike award.
The prize for the Best Post-1980s Bike went to Jeff Chambers' BMW, and the overall Best In Show trophy went to the 1950 Ariel owned by John Thrave.
Among the other bikes on display was a Slippery Sam which, the owner told me, is a genuine Les Williams bike and not a replica. Richard Lancaster's Indian also received much admiration although he didn't take it into the show arena so wasn't eligible for an award.
Next year, we hope for better weather so that more people can come along to enjoy seeing such a varied display of interesting old bikes - not just lined up in a hall, but most of them ridden to the event and fired up to entertain the audience.
