Mad Mike's Classic Gathering
Old bikes and new bikes, old friends and new friends. An excuse for a ride, an excuse for a chinwag, maybe just an excuse to escape to the pub. Martin Gelder needed no excuse to ride to a pub car park in the middle of Leicestershire...
It's become an institution. Some would say the people involved should be put in an institution. A couple of times a year a RealClassic and IKBA stalwart known to friends and tormentors alike as Mad Mike organises a gathering in a pub car park in darkest Leicestershire.
People come from near and (quite) far to shoot the breeze, chew the fat, pass the time and kick the tyres. For some it's an excuse for a ride, for others an excuse to attack the Sunday carvery. For many, it's a chance to put faces to virtual names, to chat in real life with people who otherwise exist only as pixels and bytes, and to share a brew in convivial company.
Really, though, it's all about the bikes and the people who ride them. The old and the young, the clean and the dirty, the common and the obscure... And the bikes are just as varied, too.
Jokes are shared, tall tales are told, legs are pulled. Rivets remain uncounted but clever tweaks are applauded. There's no competition, no judging, no prizes, no shame.
The Bulls Head is near the junction of the A47 and the B582, between Leicester and Mallory Park. If you needed an excuse for a ride on a Sunday, this is it. If you weren't there, you missed out. So take a bow, Mad Mike, and we'll see you all at the next one in September.
