2015 Oostblok Rally
Wolfgang Weckeck tells us about this excellent event for old bike enthusiasts which takes place annually in the Netherlands...
I heard about this rally last year and I had been told that it was very good, so I decided to go there this year from my home in the north of Germany. The rally is held near Marrum in Holland, so I dragged my Jawa outfit from the garage, gave it a quick once-over, fired the bike up and rode off towards the Dutch border. I had a nice dry ride to the rally site, in spite of the chilly weather; the little engine purred all the way to the rally site which was about 160 miles from my home.
This rally is held every year one weekend before the Whitsun weekend, and this was the eleventh time it had been held. I decided to go one day early before the rally starts. Aukje, who runs the campsite with her husband, made us very welcome (I was not the only early arrival). The campsite is first class, with excellent toilets and showers that are very hot. There is also a bar that serves drinks. The campsite used to be a farm and I climbed to the top of a silo to get some great photos; you could see for miles from there. Later on I put my tent up and settled in for the evening.
On Thursday several of us went for a ride out to see more of the local area. Whilst out we decided to visit the Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker. The planetarium has the oldest still working model of the solar system. This was an interesting place and well worth the ride out. (See www.planetarium-friesland.nl/en)
On Friday, Witse, the rally organiser, who had done a great job with the rally, offered us a speedboat trip across the sea to Ameland Island. This was very popular and the boat had to make two trips, otherwise it would have been overloaded. Luckily I went on the second trip, with a few less people on board; the boat was hitting nearly 50mph. It was an exciting ride. I had hoped to take a video film but this was too risky, so I hung onto the boat rail instead!
Later in the day my Polish friend, Michael, and his son Anton arrived with their Jawa .
On Saturday morning the Dutch MZ Club invited all rally guests for a free breakfast at a small village called Dokkum. Unfortunately I overslept and missed it! However Michael and Anton went and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, consuming lashings of scrambled eggs on toast and bacon, etc.
Saturday is the highlight of this meeting, with classic cars and motorcycles following a route through two local villages and the campsite, stopping off at rally points in the villages where the vehicles can be looked at. Approximately 600 cars and bikes take part; it was really good to see all these old vehicles on the move. Whilst this was going on a band was playing on the camp site. I noticed there were several English motorcyclists camping here.
I had a really good time in Holland and I hope to be there again next year.
